The cases illustrated are based on the fundamentals of andragogy sharpening clinical skills and what students would be assessed on in an examination setting. The book should also undoubtedly serve as a convenient tool for physicians to teach and assess students in clinical reasoning and professional practice. The 51+ Examination Cases discussed are essentially similar to those used for the clinical examinations for undergraduates either as Long Case, OSLER or as OSCE. Some of the investigations mentioned could also be utilized as OSPE questions for data interpretation. Each case begins with an overview of the clinical condition, highlighting vital information that would eventually pave the way for subsequent discussion. A typical case vignette in questionnaire format follows. Specific information is given to the student to assist him in eliciting an excellent history and perform an accurate clinical examination. The subsequent discussion revolves in developing a differential diagnosis. Clinical reasoning skills are incorporated wherever relevant to enable the student to understand how the diagnosis is confirmed after requesting and reviewing the clinical findings and relevant investigations. Subsequently, additional information is provided to assist the student as to how only relevant investigations should be requested thus avoiding listing of investigations without discriminating their value in diagnosis and assessment of complications of the disease. This discriminative approach paves the way to nuture higher reasoning skills and higher cognitive thinking . In discussing the management of the clinical condition, the student is taken through several aspects of management although not all may be relevant especially if the case is presented as a short OSCE. By being comprehensive in explaining the management of the case, students should be able to appreciate the holistic approach towards clinical management. The authors have painstakingly elaborated the vital points that students should address in the course of their clerking and presentation through check lists. Each of the case discussed has three important sections that students need to take note of: Must know facts, common omissions and questions that may be asked. The inclusion of advanced level questions for high achievers should motivate students to read further on the subject so that clinical performance can be further enhanced to a higher level. Both students and their teachers should use the material presented in each of the cases to prepare the candidate for clinical examinations by incorporating time constraints befitting the assessment tool, either as OSCE (short and long) or OSLER/LONG CASE. EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION IN MEDICINE: 51+ Examination Cases Illustrated features a concise approach equipping medical students with necessary skills to excel in the undergraduate clinical examination. It is also a useful teaching tool for physicians involved in preparing students for excellent performance at high stake examinations.
