Manual small incision cataract extraction is state-of-the-art surgery for management of age-related cataracts in many developing countries. It is a surgical procedure that is easy to master, safe, faster than a conventional ECCE, and an effective method which delivers optimal visual results comparable to phacoemulsification with less chance of complications and no additional cost of instruments or equipment. It also serves as an optimal technique for use during the conduction of cataract surgery eye camps where a large volume of patients can be operated with good visual results in a short time. In a developing country like India, many surgeons are not trained to perform phacoemulsi-fication and there is also a scarcity of phacoemulsification equipment due to financial constraints.
